Our Petite Doves Wax Seal Charm is a captivating piece of Victorian history with roots reaching back to the ancient world. Originally made as a petite wax-seal signet fob worn on a pocket watch chain, the tiny intaglio depicts two doves gathered around a drinking vessel, a scene that appears to echo the celebrated Roman mosaic the “Doves of Pliny.”
The ancient motif comes from a mosaic attributed to the second-century BCE Greek artist Sosos of Pergamon. Pliny the Elder famously described a dove drinking from a vessel while others rested along its rim, marveling at the artist’s ability to capture even the reflection and shadow on the water. A Roman version discovered at Hadrian’s Villa helped revive the image centuries later, and the Doves of Pliny became a favorite motif in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century jewelry.
Tiny, romantic, and wonderfully storied, this antique fob - captured in solid bronze - is a beautiful Victorian treasure carrying a whisper of the ancient world.
