Our Cicada earrings began with an antique Bohemian glass button—an exquisitely detailed little insect from the Victorian era. Every beautifully timeworn detail has been preserved through lost-wax casting in solid bronze.
The Victorians were fascinated by the natural world, and insects appeared throughout their jewelry, textiles and decorative arts. But the cicada’s hidden history reaches much further into the past. Ancient Athenians wore golden cicada ornaments in their hair, identifying themselves with an insect believed to emerge from the earth and symbolizing their deep connection to the soil of Attica.
In Plato’s Phaedrus, cicadas were said to have once been humans who became so enchanted by the newly born Muses that they sang without stopping to eat or drink. Transformed into cicadas, they were granted a life devoted entirely to song and entrusted with reporting to the Muses which mortals honored them.
