Our Poppy Earrings began with something wonderfully ordinary: the botanical handle of an antique teaspoon, transformed into a pair of elegant earrings blooming with poppies.
The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) was named the state flower of California in 1903, thanks in no small part to the remarkable Sara Plummer Lemmon. Born in 1836, Lemmon was an artist, teacher, nurse, librarian, botanist, and devoted lover of the outdoors—a wonderfully accomplished woman who championed the brilliant golden flower that grows across the western United States and into Mexico.
We cast the original antique piece in solid bronze, preserving every lovely botanical detail and giving this small piece of history a new life.
Antique decorative and souvenir teaspoons became a collecting sensation in the late nineteenth century, when travelers gathered these tiny works of art as keepsakes of places, people, and experiences. Once treasured as everyday objects and mementos, these beautifully detailed spoons are artifacts of another life—transformed now into forever keepsakes with a hidden history all their own.
