Our Alignment Earrings began with the striking angular cut-steel rivets of a 19th-century button—tiny pyramids designed to catch and reflect the light. This pair is accented with iridescent "carnival glass" Bohemian beads that shimmer with purple, blue, green and fuchsia.
Carnival glass emerged around the turn of the 20th century, when metallic salts were applied to pressed glass to create a luminous, rainbow-like surface. The shimmering finish appeared on everything from vases and bowls to the beautifully molded glass buttons made in Bohemia and later Czechoslovakia. And the name? These colorful pieces were frequently offered as prizes at carnivals and fairgrounds—giving an everyday object a wonderfully festive bit of sparkle.
Hand-cast in solid sterling silver, their crisp geometry forms a visually striking line. The faceted surfaces flash against the darker antiqued recesses, preserving the industrial glamour of the original cut steel while giving it an entirely new life.
