Our Mythic Necklace began with a Victorian button bearing a magnificent winged lion—part earthly strength, part impossible flight. Surrounded by intricate ornament and faceted cut-steel rivets, it feels like a tiny relic from a half-remembered legend.
Winged lions have crossed cultures and centuries under many names. Related Mesopotamian guardians known as lamassu or shedu watched over palace gateways, while the lion-headed winged form became the Lion of Saint Mark, enduring symbol of Venice. A true griffin has the head and talons of an eagle; this proud creature is unmistakably lion, belonging to the family of winged guardians associated with courage, sovereignty and divine protection.
The motif would have felt especially resonant in the Victorian era, when archaeological discoveries in ancient Assyria inspired a fascination with winged guardians and carried their imagery into European jewelry and decorative arts. Every beautifully timeworn detail of the original button has been preserved through lost-wax casting in solid sterling silver, from its sweeping feathers and curling tail to the constellation of rivets beneath it.
An ancient guardian rediscovered in a Victorian artifact and transformed once again into a bold talisman with a hidden history all its own.
