Our Petite Cicada Earrings began with a beautifully detailed Bohemian glass button—a miniature work of art from the celebrated Czech tradition of glass buttonmaking. Through lost-wax casting, we captured every delicate wing, line and timeworn detail in solid metal, transforming one tiny antique into a pair of wonderfully sculptural earrings.
Cicadas have fluttered through art and adornment for thousands of years. They enchanted the Victorians, who incorporated insects into jewelry and textiles, while ancient Athenians wore golden cicadas in their hair. In Greek mythology and philosophy, their song connected them to the Muses, while their extraordinary emergence from the earth made them enduring symbols of renewal and transformation.
